What Do The Numbers After HCS Mean?
The numbers after each model indicate how many amps are required from the circuit breaker in order to function.
So for example, the HCS-40 would require at least a 40 amp circuit to be installed, and an HCS-60 would require a 60 amp circuit breaker to be installed.
What Do The P and R In The Product Name Mean?
When looking at the ClipperCreek charging stations you may see a P or and R in the product name. For example HCS50-P, or HCS60-R. The P stands for Plug-in and R stands for Ruggedized.
When a station is ruggedized, this refers to the connector head that plugs into the vehicle to charge the car.
A ruggedized station can connect via plug or a hardwired “spliced” connection. The ruggedized stations also feature a field replaceable connector head button latch that easily swaps out if need be. Lastly, the ruggedized units have a slightly more impact resistant connector head and come with a longer 5 year warranty.

If the ruggedized is plug-in as well, it will have the PR after the HCS product name. For example, an HCS-40R is a hardwired ruggedized station, and the HCS-40PR is a plug-in, ruggedized station.
Indoor vs Outdoor Installation
Generally, for an outdoor installation, we recommend a hardwired station, as it provides the best weather protection for the supply cable (that is, the cable that feeds the charging station with electricity).
ClipperCreek’s hardwired models have a 3 foot conduit whip, which allow for more flexibility during install.
If you intend to install a plug-in unit outside, keep in mind that United States national electric code requires protection of the outlet itself from the elements via a weather-proof outlet cover. ClipperCreek’s plug-in units have a cord length of 12 inches, including the plug head. As the station install needs to be in an upright position, this can make it difficult to fit the 12 inch plug under the umbrella like outlet cover.
If you intend to install your unit in an indoor location, say in a garage, the choice is yours.
In Closing
