Ultrawide vs Dual Monitor: Which One Is For You? 2022

If you’re in the market for a new monitor, you may be wondering if an ultrawide is the right choice for you. In this article, Glitchmind will compare Ultrawide vs Dual Monitor to help you decide which one is best for your needs.

Ultrawide monitors are all the rage these days and for good reason. They offer a lot of screen real estate, making them perfect for multitasking or gaming. But if you’re not sure if an ultrawide is right for you, maybe a dual monitor setup is a better option.

What is a dual monitor setup?

A dual monitor setup has two screens rather than one. Dual monitor setups were traditionally composed of two monitors with standard 16:9 aspect ratios and resolutions up to 4K. This type of dual-monitor setup allows each monitor to have a different answer or mixed. For example, two 4k monitors can be used, one 1080p and one 1440p monitor. You can use any combination that you like.

What are Ultrawide Monitors?

Ultrawide monitors are displays with a 21:9 aspect ratio. They are designed to be similar to traditional movie theatre screens. You can expect screen resolutions between 2560 and 3440 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high or 1440 pixels high, depending on the size of your display. Display sizes range from 29 inches to 34 inches diagonally.

This is a lot of horizontal space. Sometimes more than you can get by putting two or three displays together. A single, wide monitor allows for seamless gaming and working without the need to place bezels between documents or windows.

The ultimate goal is to have one (or more) displays on your desk with more space than the smaller ones combined. These displays can be connected using only one (or two!) connectors on your card. Ultrawide displays allow you to run native resolutions with current-generation video cards.

Gamers can even run your current graphics card on ultrawide displays. You don’t have to upgrade to more power or ports or, in some cases, to two or three more cards to make it all work seamlessly.

Ultrawide vs Dual Monitor: Which one should you choose?

1. Screen Real Estate

If you look for the raw solution, you may think that ultrawide monitors have a higher resolution than other models. LG currently offers a 38-inch ultrawide screen at a 3840 x 1600. This screen has a total resolution of 6,144,000 pixels.

However, if you have three 24″ monitors with Full HD (1920×1080) resolutions, you can get 6,220,800 pixels. These three monitors are half the cost of an ultrawide display.

2. Workspace Management

Users choose ultrawide displays or multiple displays to run applications simultaneously. You can see how each setup handles different running programs.

Windows 10 Snap Feature

Windows 10 allows you to easily divide by snapping apps onto your display’s left, right, or corner edges. You can split two monitors into eight sections by snapping apps to their corners.

However, if you have only one ultrawide display, you can only split it into four sections. Although each area is much larger, you might not be able to see all of your apps.

FancyZones & Similar Apps

PowerToys FancyZones is one solution. This program lets you divide your screen into manageable sections virtually.

You can even create your sections, making this a more flexible layout. You can divide your screen between making your apps work the way you want them to.

It can be tedious, especially for non-power users, to program. If you place apps in custom sections, there may be occasions when they misbehave.

Multitasking with Full-Screen Apps

Dual-screen setups are a good option if multiple full-screen apps run simultaneously. This holds especially for video editors, photo editors, and game streamers.

3. Physical arrangement

Ultrawide monitors have better physical characteristics than multi-monitor sets. They are smaller in size. A single power supply and signal cable are required for one ultrawide display.

Dual or triple-screen displays require twice as many cables or more. If you have a triple or dual monitor mount, you will need one base.

Bezels will always be a disadvantage for ultrawide screens over other screens. Ultrawide screens do not have bezels that block your view. Dual screens will have one in the middle.

A triple monitor setup has one advantage over an ultrawide. You can enhance your immersion by positioning the secondary monitors at the perfect angle. The 1000R rating is currently the highest for ultra-wide curved screens. However, a triple-monitor setup could allow your display to be rated at 500R or less.

4. Price

Ultrawide displays are more expensive than the standard 16:9 screen, as mentioned previously. An extra monitor is more affordable if you have one already. Ultrawide screens are more affordable than two monitors if you build a system.

Ultrawide vs Dual Monitor: Which one should you choose?

Dual Monitor vs Ultrawide: Which is the Best Setup?

1. Productivity

A dual- or triple-monitor setup is more suitable for running multiple applications at once. Lightroom and Premiere allow you to use a second monitor to see your work on full screen. Another display can be used to view folders and references. You can do all this while you work on your primary display.

2. Gaming

An ultrawide monitor is better for gamers than dual-screen displays. This gives you a more comprehensive view and distracts you from your face. This is especially true when you play first-person shooters and top view games.

A triple monitor setup is possible if running a simulation, such as a flight simulator. The bezels will appear to blend into the scenery because they are not in the middle of your view. Your side windows would be the secondary monitors. The bezels would appear as a part of the windscreen.

It’s better to have multiple screens if you are a streamer of games. OBS Studio allows you to divide your screen to show a particular monitor section, but most games will require the entire display to run.

Multitasking is necessary if you have only one monitor. It will be required to regularly switch between streaming, communication, or your game. You might have to put ugly overlays on your game that take away from the immersion.

This problem is not present on multiple displays. It is possible to monitor streaming and comms simultaneously.

Older games that don’t support the ultrawide format will also be less problematic. This is because it can be set to run on your primary display and not across all your screens.

3. Movies

Ultrawide monitors are the best for movie lovers. Any trickery will not hide your screen’s bezel. If you primarily use your screen to watch movies, an ultrawide display is the best choice.

Two monitors to track the win

It is obvious. Dual monitors win out over ultrawide. Dual monitors offer more flexibility and are better for multitasking. If you purchase high-end 4K monitors, you will get more pixels than any ultrawide.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that a dual-monitor setup will be better for everyone. I prefer an ultrawide monitor. An ultrawide monitor is great for immersion in MMO, strategy, and simulation games. A 34-inch ultrawide monitor is perfect for me, as I don’t have the space to fit a pair of 27″ monitors. Your needs should be considered when choosing the right size. Because it suits my niche best, ultrawide is my preference. Dual monitors are the best in almost all situations.
